Defining Stuff: Studium, Punctum, and Learning Through Focus

Today we'll move on to our next paper: The Definition Paper. We will try to understand the concept of defining something and move towards an understanding of our next paper. And we will have an assignment that will, if it works properly, upset you enough to think differently about how technology affects you today.

In-Class assignment for today: TBA in class. Bring your...
- Towel or Mat
- A pencil/pen
- A sheet of Paper and something to write on.

Studium and Punctum: The tools to help us create definition:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNiXzvRcw6M

Homework due on Monday:
BLOG: (read/print out all instructions before you start)
Step 1:
Inform important people that you will be going without technology for 24 hours. Get out a notepad and a pen to document ideas during this time.

Step 2:
Blog post your start time (ex. "Gary Ancheta 4:20pm START)

Step 3:
Go 24 hours without: Cell Phones, Computers, Internet, Radio, Television, and Fax Machine. Make sure you keep certain technologies (like cell phones) in case of emergency, but refrain from using technologies. Note any times that you want to use technology above, but cannot use the technology above.

Step 3:
Blog post your end time (ex "Gary Ancheta 4:20 pm END") and write three paragraphs about your experiences in your day without technology. What did you learn? How did you feel without? What did you notice about other people's reaction to technology or to the experiment?

Step 4:
Begin research on your paper (see below)

READ: CW 509-520 “Definition”
BRING: three different definitions of your "technology issue" or "technology" (see assignment) from a dictionary, from wikipedia, and from an encycolopedia or other articles.

At the begining of the day, I didn't really notice it until I wanted to sit down to watch tv. But as the day progressed I hated it! I wanted to use my phone to look up where a good place to eat would be(since I'm out of town)and I coudn't do it because of the experiment. When I told every one around me about what I had to do, they all laughed at me and said I wouldn't last an hour. Ugh! Thank God, I have it all back now!!

I am not doing this assignment. I can see it's merit and it probably would be interesting to have accomplished, but most of my interests are reached through the computer, (which, incidentally, is not a communication tool/tech. itself, but a hardware platform upon which software and or other hardware can be added on which can be used to communicate. Without wires or a wireless card a computer can't communicate at all.) and as I hate boredom almost as much as pain, I won't be participating.
Good luck to my fellow classmates, and no hard fellings Mr. Ancheta. But in the words of Guren Lagen, "Rah rah, fight the Pow-ah!"

Beginnig this whole 24 hour task I was kind of desperate to use technology, but I survived! I had a pop quiz today because I couldn't get the memo through text messages, but overall it was a experience that wasn't quite fun and not one that I'd like to do again but lets just say it was DIFFERENT! I can't survive without technology it should be added in Marslow Hiercharhy of needs pyramid.

End time I admit that I do not use technnology as often as most people probably do. Ussually I am at work all the time, and my job doesnt require me to use any technology except for the radio that usually plays music in the background. My day was easy not using any technology because I did not have to go to work. It should have been a boring day, but i kinda just relaxed all day. Not having technology makes life less stressful. I would rather listen to birds chirp and waterfalls splashing all day over hearing the radio anyways. People need technology, so going without technology would not be possible. Going out to the beach and laying under the sun all day sounds funner to me than playing video games and talking on my cell phone. Everyone should stop watching so much television anyways. There are so many reasons why people need technology because without technologyy people would die. Technology to an extent is a method of survival. Without warnings of tornados, and certain life threatning situations people could actually die. So my conclusion of this project is that I liked because I dont really like technology anyway.

For the first four hours, I didn’t feel any difference. Next morning, it was Saturday, the first thing I wanted to do was to turn on my laptop, check my e-mail and facebook. I took a laptop and started openning it when I understood that I couldn’t use it for the next seven hours. I put it away. I was a bit frustrated. I concluded that I use laptop unconciously. I think it’s more of a habit. During these 24 hours, I started reading a book and spent several hours outdoors instead of browsing Internet.
All in all, I can say, I definitely can spend 24 hours without TV, radio, fax, newspaper and even cell phone, but it’s difficult for me not to use computer and Internet.

Jill O'Reilly said...

Jillian O'Reilly END TIME
After I came home on Friday from a busy day at work, I was actually looking forward to relaxing and not doing anything. I knew that I would be going through the next 24 hours without any of the communication technologies that I have grown accustomed to. I figured this would not really be too much of a big deal for me. Explaining this assignment to my family and friends was a bit awkward as they are not in school and totally did not understand why I had to do this.
My 24 hour period started on Friday evening at 7:00 pm. Before hand, I made all the calls and texts that I needed to make, checked all my bookmarked websites before I shut down my computer, and prepared some crafts for my kids to do instead of watching television. Friday evening wasn’t so bad, my girls and I ate dinner, did a craft and then they went to bed. I had a couple of glasses of wine and read a book. Saturday rolls around and my kids are used to watching their cartons in the morning. That didn’t go over too well. There was a lot of crying because they did not understand why they couldn’t watch television or play any computer games. We were all going crazy with boredom. So we decided to go to the Florida Aquarium, just to get out of the house. That passed most of the day away and kept our minds off of not being able to use some of the technological devices that we are used to. After we got home from the Aquarium, we finished our dinner, had their baths and did their homework, it was already 7:00 pm and my time was finally over.
My 24 hour period of no communication technology was not so bad. I realized that if you can get away from all of the things that are tempting you, that you really do not think about them too much. The idea for me was to keep busy and try not to think about what I was missing. It seemed much easier for me than for my kids but we all seemed to survive without any ramifications from it. But I wouldn’t ever want to do it again.

End Time

Ok so I started Thursday and ended today which is Sunday. This assignment wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. After, I posted my start time I actually went to bed early for the first time since middle school. I woke up the next day at 12:30 pm so I decided that cleaning the house would be a good idea. For the next 2 hours and a half I was cleaning the house top to bottom. I took a hour long soak in the tub then went to the pool because I had nothing else to do. I noticed that my dad and mom's telephone were cut off and they were just miserable without it. My dad couldn't text any of his friends about parties or baseball and my mom couldn't talk to her friends and gossip.
At 8 my parents and I decided to go a party at their friend's house. We stayed at the house until 3am in the morning and promptly went home to get some sleep. We all woke up around 2 pm and decided to go to the park where we watched my parent's friends play baseball until 10 pm. Then, we went to my uncle's house for an hour where he made us watch t.v. but since my 24 hours where up long ago I decided to watch. Now, we came I did some online homework and finished everything along with this assignment. Going without technology wasn't that hard because I noticed I don't even watch t.v. I just like hearing the noise of it, I don't use my cellphone unless someone calls me, and lastly the internet I only use it when I'm bored so since I was busy I didn't even use it. So good luck to everybody else whose working on this.

End time 11:25 am

It was hard being without technology. I am so use to texting all day long, but I found another way to pass the time. I went out shopping with my Mom and my Grandma. We went everywhere to the bank, the gas station, Wal-mart, Sam’s club, the Mall, we ate out all day too. We had Mc Donald’s for breakfast, Taco-Bell for lunch, and Popeye’s chicken for dinner. It kept us from tempting to turn on the television to watch television we did not get home from ten-o-clock in the morning until seven-o-c lock at night. After we unloaded everything we bought in the car we all got comfortable and ready to begin to play dominoes. At my mom’s house my ma, her boyfriend, and I play dominoes all weekend long and get drunk too. We play double-nine donimoes the Cuban-way, in fact. I was on fire. I won in total often games and my mom and her boyfriend won about four each. Now it may sound quick but we play in rounds. Whoever gets one hundred or more points wins the round. It was nice playing dominoes, without my cell phone distracting me. The bottles of Patron, Smiroff, and Barcardi helped also to pass the time. Our neighbores are use to hearing us play doinmoes until the very late hours of the night, hearing our laughter and the sound of the doinmoes pieces on the round, glass table. So we all went to bed to around four-o-clock-in the morning and slept in the morning. The next day we began our normal routine again. My mom, my grandma, and I went out shopping most of the day, and then again another night of donimoes action. Once again all slept in, and without notice I realized it was already my end time of twenty-four hours with-out technology.
What I learned was that, technology it not neccsary in everyday life. I mean being with your family and friends all day long is a lot better then texting them all day. Is project was stressful it was tempting to turn on the radio, to look at my inbox of text messages, and the laughter of my friends from me explaining my project to them. But I got through it with shopping and getting drunk playing doinomes! The reason why I am responding so late to my end time is that I just barely woke-up, laughing-out-loud!

Alicia Haag, this was my start time I had forgotten to put my name so I deleted the original comment, I was positive I reposted, but I guess I was wrong.

End Time

For the first few hours it was hard not using my phone, I had turned it off, but it was like the phone itself was calling my name. I gave it to my mom so I wouldn’t be tempted. I had told my friends of my assignment the day before, some of them though it was a joke, others couldn’t believe I was actually going to attempt the assignment at all. But I must say, this assignment spiked my curiosity. A few hours into the assignment I could hear my 8 year old sister rhythmically tapping on her desk, I yelled across the hallway asking what she was doing. She replied in a monotone voice "im bored!", I had just finished putting pics up on my wall I could only laugh and reply "I’m right there with ya". I got to admit, going without technology almost made me feel like I was in high school again, and I was grounded. As the night passed my friends came to my house ecstatic. They had been to the Tampa Bay Rays game and they had been on TV. They were asking if I had seen them, I reminded them of my assignment. They immediately lost excitement and all at once expressed their feelings of my assignment. From there we went to a gathering with all of our friends and stayed out till around 4a.m. Once I got home she came to my room asking where I had been, I explained to her I had lost track of time, cause once again I had no cell phone, which just so happens to double as my watch. I wasn’t able to sleep so I pulled out my math book and finished 5 sections of HW. Going to bed around 7, needless to say, I woke up at 3 and went and laid out by the pool until, well now.
My life without technology, by choice I would never go without it, but if I was forced to, I think I could find other ways to survive

END TIME 4:39

24 HOURS WITHOUT TECHNOLOGY MEDIUMS

I started at 4:30pm yesterday; I learned that being without cell phone, computer, and television can be a little stressful with a husband and three children. As soon as I announced I was starting my son brings me the computer to read one of his emails for HCC financial aid and he said,” momma just don’t tell.” I said, “Boy you are wrong with a laugh.” About 6:00pm, we went to the mall to buy my son an outfit for graduation. They were nice to not have the music on in the car. So my family suffered a little not being able to listen to music. At 8:00pm, we ate dinner and I was in bed reading a book I brought a few weeks ago of course I fell to sleep. The hardest part was keeping myself busy so I wouldn’t pay attention to what my family members was doing.
The next day was a little easier; I feel that planning your day without technical devices goes a little more pleasant. I was out of the house for four hours today. I drop my cocker off to the groomer, took care of some jewelry that needs cleaning and inspected. Then I went to Publix to order my son graduation cake which will be very nice. I left my cell phone on in case my daughter called for any reason but by text, she didn’t try me. You just have to stay busy.
The most annoying thing about this project is that the landline phone rings so much that I had to listen to messages this afternoon. Well I guess not answering the phone should have been a relief this weekend. Some of my family members didn’t remember my assignment so they called several times today. My immediate family was excited that a teacher would suggest a project of sort but they made sure I didn’t use any even thou my son tempted me.
I am glad the development of technology is improving. I’m sure if I had to go another 24 hours my house would be spotless.

A day without technology was not as bad as I thought it would do. The day pretty much started around 5:00 when I woke up to a set alarm located on my phone and decided to check some emails and reply to important ones seeing that it wasn’t going to be until 24 hours later that I would be able get online again. I officially started my assignment around 5:30, I usually check on the news and see what’s going on in the world I couldn’t do that I decided that I would forget about the news, it’s Saturday anyways, and read a book…well that lasted all of 30 minutes cause before I knew it I was sleeping. Unfortunately I had to be a work at 9:45. I normally have my alarm on my cell set for 8:30 so I can get ready for work and start my day but for this assignment I respected it and didn’t, well long story short I woke up late. I did make it to work before it was time to open but I was late.
During the day, it was a little difficult for me because I couldn’t answer my cell all day. I did have to work on a computer at work which is a register. But my manager suggested, during the slower part of the day, which is the morning, to manually write out the transactions for the customers. So for the first ten or so customers I wrote out the transactions. If I would have to do this every day, all day I would without a doubt have a different job. It takes at least 3 times longer to do this manual thing. I love registers. As I was at work I started to think of all the things that I couldn’t do, or would take a long time there if we didn’t have computers. I would have the manually cash out customers, manually ship the hundreds of shoes that we ship on a daily bases, we would have to call another store to see if they have a particular shoe, and all kinds of things that would make my already long days even longer.
This day was absolutely an eye opener. I learned to appreciate the technology that I have been so blessed to be able to enjoy. Think about it, 50 years ago people had to go to a pay phone to use the phone when they were not home. They had to manually process an order at a department store. I love my cell phone I use it as a planner, an alarm clock, an mp3 player, the internet, IM, picture sharing, and the list can go on and on, but a day without it taught me that I can enjoy all of these features , and still enjoy life. And it also taught me to be thankful for technology .

The typical response I heard when my assignment was mentioned: "24 hours without technology...for your English Comp class? What for?"
This assignment, as far as I see it, was to help us see just how pervasive technology is in our lives. And it is.
I must admit that I'm a little behind the times when it comes to texting and things like that. So for me, the assignment wasn't as hard as it may have been for some. Though I did miss the internet. I've gotten so used to instant access to information; whatever question comes up, I can answer it within 30 seconds.
My 24 hours went by without incident. I had a graduation party that I had to attend that took up a lot of time. Other than that I read quite a bit and played guitar. All in all...not so bad.

Well, this proved to be more of a challenge than I expected. I had to dodge many, phone calls before I decided to turn my phone off but it was actually very peaceful.

I found myself spending much more time outside. It was peaceful out doors. I went for an hour walk, a swim, and a bike ride. I even did a little painting.

It was actually nice to spend some time alone with a different perspective on life. What I found hard was not watching tv or using the computer at night. In the end I found a good book and read until I fell asleep.

As I started this assignment, I thought that this would be particularly difficult, seeing as how I grew up in a digital age, my entire life being composed of electronics. At first, I figured by starting my 24 hours at night, it would be easy. I normally go to sleep with the TV on, but as usual, I was able to sleep without a problem. The next morning, I woke up, and walked over to the TV to turn it on to watch the news, and stopped myself short. I figured, if there was anything special going on in the news, it will still be there tomorrow. So, to distract myself for the day, I took my motorcycle out to go riding through north Tampa, to go and see some of the sights out in the wilderness.

After riding for a few hours, I pulled over to a café to have some lunch, seeing as how I had been out for most of the day so far. When I was sitting down to eat, I saw that both the hostess and the waitress had been on their phones, texting away the whole time, oblivious to the outside world. I smiled, mostly because I usually do the exact same thing. I think from now on I will try and pay attention to the things going on around me, as the phone can wait.

I just finished the homework assignment and im feeling refreshed. Not being around technology really brought my family and I closer. Lastnight after dinner we decided to play some board games. I went to bed fairly early and woke up well rested. When I woke up I decided to make breakfast for everyone. It was a beautiful day so we decided to hang out by the pool and BBQ. I thought about the pros and cons of technology. I feel like it can push a family apart when time is spent on a computer, tv, or a phone. You dont learn as many traditions and values as you would without it. I noticed at the pool some lady on her cell phone, she didn't even notice her two girls wresteling in the water. It is a distraction from your reality.
On the contrary technology may be verry useful at times. You have contact with people in far away places. Technology saves you time, space, and allows you to share information.

Well I went the 24 hours without any cellphone, computer, internet, fax machine, tv or radio. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be actually. After I woke up this morning we went to church where none of the items are used anyway. Then we went to chuck e cheese for 2 of my kids birthday party. We just had people call my husbands phone instead of mine if they needed us.
After the party was over we had to take a trip to Hudson with out the radio. This is nothing different to us though. The car rides are where we talk the most. And with the party today we had plenty to talk about. Then we went to dinner and gat home late. Between showers teeth brushing and preparing for school tomarrow I didn't even think of the items on the list. I guess it helps to have lots of kids to keep you busy!!

Well it turned out to not be as bad as I thought. I told my boyfriend about my assignment Friday night and he agreed to help me with it. I planned to take my twenty four hours on Sunday and told him to just take me out to entertain me. He called my house phone to let me know he was on his way to pick me up. However, when my mother picked up the phone she had forgotten about my assignment, assumed he was a telemarketer and hung up. Shortly after that he rang the doorbell and I answered in my pajamas with last night's make up still on. He told me he had called but had been hung up on. When I asked my mother about it she turned beet red and apologized to him. He and I could not stop laughing! I took a shower and we were gone. We drove about town and ran errands then went to his parent's house for dinner.
I thought I would miss my cell phone the most but it was great not having my mother asking what time I planned to be home. (Yes, I know I'm 21 but that doesn't matter in a Mexican household.) What I did miss was the radio and television. Other than that yesterday was a good day. Would I do it again? I can't say I would. Although I might tell my mom I can't use my cell phone again. That was definately peaceful...

The end is finally here! This was much harder then I thought it would be. It was easy while I was at work because I would stay busy. I left my cell phone in my car to avoid the temptation of texting. When I got home I decided to read a financial book I had been meaning to crack open. My husband was working so I read, cleaned the house and relaxed until he got home. We ate a late dinner and talked for a while then I went to bed because I really wanted to watch a movie! This was not fun for me at all, I am so happy to have it all back!!!!

End Time: 5:09 p.m.

I started right before I had to go into work, so that was eight hours off my time. After work, I basically read until I fell asleep around midnight. I woke up around 8:30 am, per usual, and went for my morning workout routine down at the fitness center. When I got back to my apartment, I basically cleaned all day. It was very relaxing, considering I’ve been ill most of the weekend. At one point I went out by the pool to tan and read my book, but I mostly cleaned. Then ran an errand to grab food for dinner.
But for the most part, I don’t use a lot of the technologies we were prohibited from in class, so it was a relatively easy assignment. Though I do find the days that I use less technologies are more relaxing then days that I depend heavily on them.

END: When the the 24 hours was finally up i had a new appreciation for technology. I had no problem going without a fax machine but the computer and internet was a bit harder considering that i had a weekends worth of homework that was all online. The radio was a little difficult but managed to just listen to my cds. However, the cell phone was a different story. At first it was relaxing not to have my phone blow up all the day but over time i began to feel naked without it, but i managed to hang in there and go the full 24 hours without using it.

I started my 24 hrs w/out technology on Friday 5/29 at 4:15, the time I got off work. My friend and I went to the gym for an hour. Then we went to the store to get drinks and munchies and went back to her house and started drinking w/ a couple more people. I left her house tipsy so when I got home I went straight to sleep. Saturday morning I got up at 10 a.m., took a shower and got ready to go out. I ate breakfast w/ my boyfriend, got my headlight fixed, and got a facial. The rest of the time was easy because I went to Busch Gardens w/ my boyfriend and his family that came from out of town.

My day actually went surprisingly alright. I was able to strategically placed it during a time I would be out the whole day. I started as soon as I got the call from a guy I was trying to buy a guitar from. I knew the meeting place and I was ready to start. After getting the guitar I was off to my cousin's graduation party...

I realized that technology is just another way to pass time, fortunately, I had a party to help me do that. The next day I just played my guitar longer than I would have normally. I honestly felt pretty okay without it. I didn't get the urge to check my email until Sunday morning, but I decided to sleep in a bit longer.

People seemed to be surprised I could actually do it. I'm the kind of person who spends all of their time at home on the computer. I do not read printed material since I can get it free on the internet. I just stayed busy outside and playing guitar. The most annoying part was not being able to look up stuff on demand.

Well, I started my "day without technology", the evening before class on Monday. I have to say it was a bit harder then I'd thought it would be. The main issue for me was not being able to use my cell phone. I'm a huge text person, so not being able to text not only made a few people upset with me because they thought I was ignoring them but it was a bit flusterating to me as well. I spent the evening with my sister. We went out to grab a bite to eat then I came home to my new puppy. She kept me occupied for awhile until I went to bed. I didnt bother setting the alarm because I knew I'd be bored if I was to wake up early so I slept in.

I woke up around 2pm, took Melina for a long walk, ate lunch, showered and began getting ready for class at 6pm. It honestly didn't seem as though it was a full 24 hours but I guess you could say I did kind of arranged it that way so it would work out in my favor. As soon as 5pm hit I was on my phone like a mad women texting everyone whom I'd missed a text/call from letting them know that I was alive and well and simply carrying out a homework assignment for my english class.

It was quite an experience and one I never really stopped and thought about before. What did people do before cell phones? The answer.....they had a "real" life!!!!!!!
